Re: Launching and upgrades to 399 - another rambling post
I prefer the block floating on the traveler. I am in a small minority, most boats i’ve looked at use the fixed block. I also added a shackle to each side of the traveler and an additional block on the combing on both sides to double the purchase. The extra purchase is helpful when the breeze is on.

50/50 bleach and water in a spray bottle. May take a couple of applications, but has worked on my headliner.

Re: Need a Forward Hatch Cover
I replaced mine with the Lewmar 40, medium profile with a flange. It’s a little stouter than the low profile, not a lot of difference in price. I like the Lewmar hatch better than the Bomar because the frame is aluminum instead of plastic. Good luck.

Re: Tow weight all up.
Bare boat with cushions no motor should weigh 4600. Some hulls are a couple hundred pounds light a few are a little heavier than 4600#. Racing trim with motor, sails, etc… probably close to 5000#, my trailer weighs about 1400#. Suspect most 7.9’s tow weight will be between 6000-7500 pounds depending...

Re: Cockpit winch/rigging tips?
The only time I use the turning blocks is when i am single handing and i am cross sheeting, otherwise the sheet goes directly to the winch. We can’t use more than two wraps on the gross trim or we risk an over ride. Once gross trimmed we Usually take another wrap or two for fine trimming. Most folks...

Re: Boom aft slug slot
12-14” is a good distance. I used a rotozip with a bit for cutting aluminum, cleaned up the edges with sanding disc. Well worth the effort if you take your main off after each sail.

Re: Forward Hatch Replacement on 1986 #480
The cut out opening is 17x17, suggest buying a flange. The hatch Below will fit with a little shimming, this is from defender. Bomar and Taylormade make one with similar dimensions. Lewmar Size 40 Low-Profile Deck Hatch (39940030) Cutout: 16-9/16" x 16-9/16", 1-11/16" Corner Radius Ma...

I’ve used 50/50 bleach/water In a spray bottle. It works well, may take a couple of applications but will clean it up.

Re: Two speed winches only one speed.
The stock 16 was a 2 speed lewmar. I don’t know the model number but don’t believe there has been any material change when compared to todays Lewmar 16 2 speed. This looks like the one on my boat. https://www.lewmar.com/node/15050 Good luck
