electrical line to mast
I have a rebuilt mast and the rigger put in an electrical line to a steaming light. The old wiring under the deck, and the deck fitting itself is/are very corroded and I'd like to run new stuff. However, it seems that the wiring runs through some empty space at the front of the daggerboard case, is ...

Re: What if? 2019 Western Regionals
Just thinking out loud, here... Friday: "Tune-Up Race" and welcome shindig Saturday: 2-3 W/L races on what I would call relatively short courses in flattish water, say 5-7 miles each. Sunday: Long Distance race that would count "double" (considering as these are kinda supposed to...

What if? 2019 Western Regionals
...WHAT IF.. ...there was an S2 7.9 "Western Regional Championships" in 2019?. How many 7.9's from California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico would attend? Let's pretend it's on San Francisco Bay, just for starters. I know of two boats on SF Bay...mine and one in Vallejo. Th...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
1. Make a provision to pin the keel in place (probably a large stainless steel bolt). totally agree... maybe TWO bolts. 2. Collision bulkhead forward. I'd have to think about that. The only place to do that is to divide the V-berth... hmm. 3. Beef up and secure the forward and companionway hatches. ...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
I am considering replacing the class "drop-in" pintles on the transom with some custom ones that will look a lot more like J -29 / J-30 gudgeons and pintles. The J's use a 1-inch pin, which is preposterous overkill for an S2 7.9. Stock on our rudder is a 5/8th pin if I remember correctly. ...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
for how I built it, see the threads where I loaded up every freaking detail. End Result? It works! I'm still messing with bushings, so there's play in the gudgeons/pintles, but the rudder works well. I have good control, PHRF Nor Cal didn't penalize me *Anything* for the new rudder (it's almost exac...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
This means that I went out on the Interwebb and looked up pictures of balanced rudders from as many designs as I could find in the 25-29 foot range. Here are a few. Custom Composites rudder for a J-29 / J-30 http://www.fastcomposites.ca/site/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/J30BR-gallery-2.jpg Here's Rudd...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
Also...Rudder Craft makes rudder that are "in the ballpark" in terms of size. However, their rudder that was **allll-most** exactly what I thought I wanted is machined out of HDPE...and that stuff bends. They make a rudder which is a scooch smaller, out of wood core and fiberglass, and hon...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
Good question....OK, so my experience with the boat has been 100% positive with the ONLY exception being that the rudder is not directionally stable. By this I mean that no matter what point of sail you're on, you simply cannot let go of the tiller or the tiller will IMMEDIATELY head for the leeward...

Re: Prepping a 7.9 for offshore
On advice from the guys on ARturo the Aquaboy, who did the Pacific Cup, I built a rudder. I have a thread about it, down below. The thread has links to Sailing Anarchy and the Wooden Boat forum where I documented how I did it in gory detail. I built in about 12% balance. I had two reasons for buildi...

Re: s2 7.9 in r2ak
An S2 7.9 did the Pacific Cup...doublehanded from San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
They DNF'd due to rudder failure in 1996, then built a one-piece non-kickup rudder for 1996 and finished.

Re: making a rudder
I've been working on two rudders. I paid $200 for a bunch of straight-grain douglas fir, for the new primary rudder, and then realized that at an empty lot down the street, there's a mess of old lumber been sitting around for a couple of years. I went and grabbed some pieces. Turns out it's nice, al...

Re: If you could do it all over again...
Upgrade primary winches to self-tailers and move them back to just a little bit forward of the traveler. However, the location change is due to the fact that I singlehand a lot, and might not be important to most skippers. I want a stern pulpit...don't have one yet. I need to repaint my mast (it's w...

making a rudder
Since there is no S2 7.9 One Design here, and since I plan to take my boat into the great blue Pacific, I'm making a non-kick-up rudder. As you all know, the stock rudder is enormous and incredibly thick. Options: 1. Pay Phils Foils / Competition composites to make a new rudder. PRO: I could get som...
