Re: 2009 Rule Change Suggestions

I know most of you won't agree, but since you're considering modifying headstay length, why not go further to enhance the S2 7.9 performance: 1- Allow adjustable jib cars. 2- allow selftailing winches. 3 - Allow rigid vangs. 4. - Allow use of pole barberhauling --- There may be times that S2 7.9 OD ...

Re: Masthead Spinnaker

A good answer to the light air sheets is a set of alum. sister clips. they have very little weight and quick to set or unset. Comment on Asso spinakker for S2 7.9. Ur right the boat is too heavy for an ASso to be effective. I really agree w/ comment on learning to sail the S2 7.9 as built & rate...

NOOD 2009

Adjustable cars: can not other S2 76.9 adjust their cars under loads (by stepping on sheet ahead of the car and moving said car fore or aft ). Shortened stantions: I've shorten the mfgr. stantions and added new caps. Kaotic (my ) crew met, there was excitement about the opportunity, but I would need...

2009 NOOD

I'd like to join u in St.Pete too, but Kaotic (my S2 7.9) is not class legal, i.e. adjustable cars; shorten life lines; and other mods. Could I be accepted in fleet ? We kick ass on Mobile Bay in PHRF. but have never race in Class Fleet.

Schurr sails

James as I said in my e-mail. Hunter is a great sail maker if you live near Pensacola, Fl. Two things must happen for before he makes your sails: 1- you must have your boat rigged to be competitive. 2- He will have to measure your rig before making sails. Hunter is a master at setting up rigs to be ...

FOOT BRACE FOR DRIVER

I BELIEVE I HAVE THE SLICKEST SYSTEM. I BOUGHT A PAIR OF WEST MARINE "FOLDING STEPS" # 117440. THEY LAY PREFECTLY FLAT ON DECK AND IN HEAVY AIR I JUST FLIP THEM UP. I'M 76 YRS OLD AND THEY MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO HOLD MY BODY OUTBOARD AS BEST POSSIBLE. THERE IS NO CONLFICT W/ TRAVELER AND FREE...

mainsail trim

Dave, you're a better man than me, when I attempt to control other trim handling, I loose a 1/2 boat lenght just reaching and adjusting. Aaah, but you do use vang as I do you just prefer to correct weather helm w/ traveler yourself. My mainsail trimmer watches my tiller constantly to see if I have w...

Mainsail trim

I'd like to see a member discussion on Vang/Sheeting vs Traveler/sheeting for mainsail trim. My preference is Vang Sheeting for the following reason: the mainsail shape never changes w/ main sheet is let off in gusts or minor adjustment ( When we set the shape of the mainsail it's after headsail car...

Standing rigging

Dave thanks for reply, I fully agree w/ your additions. A couple of go fast points we use on Kaotic: We barberhaul all points of sail except beats and downwind; we ONLY use the full board on beats & tight reaches, ex: for beam reaches we use 1/2 board, often we get leeway but the VMG is good (th...

Standing rigging

I've read w/ interest of sailors expressing problems getting their S2 7.9 to point. This comment is for PHRF competitors: your standing rigging for speed and tacking inside of 70 degress: Headstay lenght 31'10", this will require a "forked shackle" and most of turnbuckle extended. Thi...

Reef set up

Kaotic (467), when had new mainsail made put in a "flatening reef". Very effective when winds in 20kts +. It takes about 30" out of foot in a triangle @ the leach to the cunnigham about 4"-6". Any reefing beyond that has not been used by us, even in 30+kts. It was suggested ...

companionway hatch cover

You might try local glass companies, they can make a cover for you, for $150 +-, The lexan the glass companies use, here on the Gulf coast, has a high resistance to impact loads and would be a cheaper sourse than most you've discussed.

board lifting sheaves

We used 3 Harken #311 sheaves & 1 #308. rebuilt fiddle w/ 1-#311 & 1-#308, other Harken #311 were @ top of lifting system. We also replaced the block in the bridge w/ harken # 311. System works great, less friction in blocks. Most of owr friction was on the side wall by the shims. When we pu...

GENOA LEAD CARS

IF YOUR RACING PHRF, I RECOMMEND YOU GO TO SCHAEFER'S ADJUSTABLE CAR SYSTEM. THEY'RE GREAT AND PERFORM SMALL ADJUSTMENTS BETTER THAN STANDARD TRACK CARS.

BOARD REMOVAL

Dave, you are so right about board construction being very poor. When we got it pulled it was delaminated on both edges from top down to 6" below hull and fractured trailing edge about 8" x 1/2" into board. We ground out edges fileed w/ epoxy and glassed over. Oh yes, the front shim w...
