Re: Balsa Core location in Hull

It's a 1/2" thick balsa, everywhere. The only area not balsa in the hull from the factory is in front of the daggerboard trunk. That's a good place to put a shoot through hull transducer. I had an area in front of the mast step that was soft. Soaked balsa. I did all the work from inside the cab...

Re: Outboard Motor Question

I had 2 stroke 7.5 hp Mercury. It came with the boat. Everytime I used it, a small oil slick formed. Started to lose power, probably compression. So I purchased a Tohatsu 6 hp sail pro with high thrust prop and extra long shaft several years ago. I steer with the tiller, just throttle at motor. It's...

Re: Spinnaker pole ring -- rivnuts?

My boat came with a track, and I can move the ring up or down. I marked it clearly with a large arrow where it should be via class rules. I generally don't move it either, but it's very secure.
I have never had any luck with Rivnuts. In theory it should work well.

Re: harken mainsheet traveler

My boat had a wood brace 1 x 4 under the track where it crosses from bench to bench. I switched it to 1 x 3 UV black acetyl. Plenty of strength that way. My old track deteriorated. All the balls ended up on the floor in the middle of a race. Tied it to center of traveler and crossed our fingers. Sti...

Re: Ermine White Pigments

If you have them add wax, it sands a lot better. They say it doesn't last as long. But I stored in refrigerator. A year later, still good. Two years, not so good, but i got it to work, then threw the balance away.

Re: Bottom/Daggerboard Prep

4 bunk trailer. I drop the inner bunks and wipe/paint as much as I can. Jack them back up and drop outer bunks for the finish. For the board, I have a triple masted forklift, so I pull it right out of the trunk. I lift it from the tang and a short piece of chain. Have done both many times over the p...

Re: Companionway sliding hatch replacement.

The actual hatch, you need to catch a hatch run. Bostons did one several years ago, and I got one. The tracks to slide the hatch are easy enough to make. I don't believe there are any anywhere, but check this site on the parts list.

Re: Advice for a 7.9 bottom job ??

I did a complete bottom job a few years after purchasing Odyssey #146. I used PEEL AWAY to remove all of the old paints. Mostly salt water antifouling. There were several layers. This product works well, when the temps are warm enough. Under 70F it takes a long time. Warmer the better. After everyth...

Re: Cracked rudder

I have done a full rudder repair. Had some cracks on the head of the rudder. I cut slots on either side of the pivot hole starting near the top of the rudder and around 18" long into the blade. I then installed 1/4" x 2" stainless steel bars and bedded them in blue above and below wat...

Re: Mast spreaders

I had that. Water gets in them when the mast is down. Where I am this freezes and can do some real damage to the spreader, so I drilled a 1/8" hole at the lowest point near the clamp.
