Re: Photos of running rigging

Hey that's my backstay :). How the backstay attaches in your cockpit will depend a lot upon your boat's layout. Mine was redone a few years ago, they use a bit of a different setup from the factory. The owner manual shows quite well how the original backstay hooked up in the cockpit. You can find it...

Re: New look of main website

Yeah I was supposed to race against Foxy in a lake michigan doublehanded distance race. Dad and I started the race but Foxy was nowhere to be seen. We bowed out of the race a few hours in when the wind piped up to 35kts and the waves built up to 8 feet -- didn't want to break anything (most of all m...

Spinnaker pole ring -- rivnuts?

Early on with my new mast I had a fun thing happen: one of the screws broke a head on my spinnaker pole ring. I ended up drilling it out and putting a slightly larger screw in, tapping the mast for it.. But I've not had a great time in general keeping screws in the ring. The mast is pretty thin and ...

Re: New look of main website

Likewise I happened on the site today (mostly 'cuz I saw a 7.9 for sale on Sailing Anarchy, Foxy, with a bowsprit and asymmetrics! Was wondering if anyone had any info on Foxy on the forums ;-)). I did just register for an account. May mail a check to the new clubexpress thing, although I think I pa...

Re: Ermine White Pigments

+1 for Minicraft/McKote. Had their smallest batch (1 pint) of gelcoat made up so I could fix a couple of chips on the deck. It was way more than I needed but that's okay. Color-match was fantastic. I was surprised since I figured 35+ years of UV exposure would make the white a bit different. I can't...

Re: Companionway cover grab bar?

Found what seems to be the 'stock' bar: Defender Marine carries the "White Water Stainless Steel Oval Grab Rail", as of 2023 sold as part number 888030. White water marine stocks it as part number 7875S. It's made from 304 stainless which is a little sad, but I guess for freshwater that's ...

Re: Companionway Trim Lace

Old thread but figured I'd help future people. I ordered a set of sample rubber trim bits from McMaster-Carr and ended up buying their part number 8451A13 "Heavy Duty Plastic Trim, Style 7". It's black rubber molding with a (I think) metal interior. Might hit the ends with some hot glue or...

Re: Lifting keel for S2 6.9

Whereabouts are you located? You might try and call Marc Crutcher at Unbridled Sailing. He has rehabbed a lot of S2s including 7.9s and 6.7s. IIRC the 6.7 and 6.9 share keels but I might be off on that. When I had my 7.9 keel repaired the fellow that did looked into shipping it out. He said that the...

Re: "L" shaped backing plate for starboard chainplate?

Thanks for the photos. G10 sounds nice and long lasting. Might do it that way too. Heading to the boat to measure the bolts on the chainplate to order some longer ones/deal with the extra thickness of some backing material. Glad I'm not the only one doing this ugly kludge. Better to keep the up and ...

Re: Lifting the keel, delrin bits in the way?

I'm prepping to actually install delrin slides on my board (they're missing, presently!). I also saw Marc at Unbridled Sailing did a S2 6.7 keel and put just short pieces of delrin at the corners of the keel (and on each end). It's hard to tell from the photo he posted (below) but it sure looks like...

This photo was shared on the sailing discord server (The Companionway). Re: "L" shaped backing plate for starboard chainplate?

Heh. I'm starting to think I'll just do my temporary solution using a medium-sized piece of plywood: pull off the backing plate, drill holes in the reinforcement plywood, get some longer bolts and attach the chainplate using longer bolts through the original (potentially compromised) bulkhead, the n...

"L" shaped backing plate for starboard chainplate?

Replacing the starboard bulkhead is on my list of TODOs but I'd like to ease my paranoia with a simpler fix for this coming season. I wonder if anyone knows of a good source for, say, an "L" or "T" shaped backing plate/bracket for the chainplate? I thought a reasonable solution u...

Hear, hear.

7.9 class Membership is literally the lowest-cost sailing-related expense I've had. And it's helped me quite a few times in tracking down parts and getting tips.

Re: Hull number 399 now mine, and home

Congrats on the pick-up! And funny, I was up in Minneapolis around MLK day doing some xc skiing. I decided to drive out to Hooper's on Sunday because I have never been. Of course it was closed and gates were closed and all that, but at least I know where it is now. They're the closest 'sailboat plac...
