Re: Launching and upgrades to 399 - another rambling post

Thanks for the input. I also have a Raymarine tiller pilot and it has proven to be essential and wonderful. I also use it to keep the boat motoring head-to-wind for sail hoisting/lowering. My two mainsails have bolt-rope slugs installed so hoisting or lowering the main is child's play. The mainsail ...

Re: Launching and upgrades to 399 - another rambling post

Your boat looks to be very nice and you are improving it (cleaning up the hull, replacing the hatch, etc). Nice work. I envy you for having all hanked on foresails. My boat came with roller furling and the associated plastic piece that encompasses the forestay. All of the 10 or so foresails that cam...

Re: Launching and upgrades to 399 - another rambling post

A couple more thoughts. I am able to raise/lower the mast completely by myself. I am an old guy and not particularly strong. An enabler of this is to have a "mast crutch" that positions the mast top at the transom as high as possible because the higher the mast top then the lower the initi...

The board is not allowing me to attach the diagrams. See https://s279.org/Tips%20and%20Tricks/mastraising.html for the same elsewhere on this site.

Here are the diagrams that depict what I use. The two side bridles were made from chain and carabiners by the PO of my boat.

Re: Launching and upgrades to 399 - another rambling post

I do it the way I see recommended. The mast is always supported laterally by the jib and spin halyards. These lateral support halyards are connected to a bridle that places the lower connection points in line with the mast butt bolt. The main halyard is used for lifting. The spin pole is simply conn...

Re: Launching and upgrades to 399 - another rambling post

I use the spin pole (less stuff to haul around when raising or lowering) but pull the mast up with the mainsheet assembly as "block and tackle"connected to the bow stem. So I am sitting near the bow with my feet braced on the bow stem while just pulling on the mainsheet with my hands (no w...

Re: Mast spreaders

My spreaders detach with just one small bolt and locking nut each. The sidestays detach from the mast quite easily without tools. I then coil each stay/spreader assembly using plastic tape to keep the coil. Store the coil in a lazaret or wherever you want for the winter.

No hole drilling required.

Re: Newbie ?s for Racing 7.9s

Hi Barry, My boat is at Port Sanilac. Yes, my plan was to sail it down to PHYC, which is a short trip as you know. It would be great if someone allowed use of their trailer to weigh my boat. I get it that weighing and checking some other things to assure all entries are class legal is important. In ...

Newbie ?s for Racing 7.9s

I am considering racing the 7.9 I have had for one year. I keep it in the water at a marina just north of Port Huron Yacht Club, so the Sept 2022 race would be perhaps doable. I have no vehicle capable of towing (I do have a good trailer and rent a pickup twice a year for boat in/out task). My quest...

Re: Injury from Hiking?

Thanks for that. I didn't know most 7.9s don't have lowers, mine does. Scanning photos on this site it wasn't easy to see what is "typical" hiking practice. But the problem probably can happen to the unwary. I agree that concern over stressing the stanchion base attachment (thus inducing w...

Injury from Hiking?

I'm reading in Sailing Anarchy that people are experiencing physical injury by pressing their gut or their back into the lower lifeline. Is this a problem on the 7.9? https://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/232051-is-hiking-hard-over-that-lower-lifeline-causing-damage/&tab=comments#co...

Re: Ice box

Thanks for that Pete. I suspected that might be the case (poor or no insulation). I suppose given the likely design use of the 7.9 icebox (just keep the beer cold until after the day's racing), S2 can be excused.

Adding insulation as you did will make a nice little project...

Re: TILLER PILOT

Can't answer the question on core. But if you drill your first hole at the "correct" size you can then inspect the hole for presence of balsa core. If none then you are good to go. If cored then maybe drill oversize, fill with thickened epoxy, and finally redrill. Standard procedure. All o...

Re: Keel template

I was VERY careful laying out the points for the keel template, Good. All Compufoil would do is take the data points you punch in and draw a best fit bezier curve through them. That will likely just match what you did by hand. So Compufoil may not be what you want. Not sure. Price is $38 and the ti...
