Plumbing

Our boat, TAMARACK, has a head and a sink. We don't use it because we don't want to polute Long Island Sound and it goes directly over the side. We are thinking of removing the installed and getting a port-a-potty. What is under the installed head? It is bolted down as one would expect, but to what?...

It is good for me because of that article in particular.
The students I teach like action and that shows how lively the S2 is.

Great mag - I have the kids read them each month.

IN CT

I was just killing a little time looking at Island Packets and stumbled across this "S2 8.0", which I figure is probably really a 7.9. http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_full_detail.jsp?slim=broker&boat_id=1417557&ybw=&hosturl=hellieryachts&&ywo=hellieryacht...

A downhaul is used to tension the luff by pulling down on the gooseneck of small boats. A cunningham serves the same function essentially, but by hauling down the luff on a boat which has a gooseneck that is not easily adjusted. Additionally, the cunningham is attached to a cringle on the luff inste...

If you have a means to force feed fresh air through the space with a blower and vents aft you may be able to do it, but I would caution against this - gasoline fumes are EXPLOSIVE and need little to set them off. We put our six gallon portable tank in the cockpit all way aft. This works well. Be sur...

And so if the standard issue 7.9 main had only the slug hauled back so it was footless, it would be okay - is that what you are saying? No problem with the boom, or with the slug's attachment to the sail? Has anyone done this? I became curious since it was asked as a 'fix' to a foot that wasn't allo...

So what would happen with just tack and clew on the boom? Could some of you experienced 7.9 sailors weigh in here?

It would seem to me that with the board being raised on beam reach, significant leeway is likely. Broad reach would make sense though.

Am I off in my thinking?

Fore guy

In looking at the drawings on dopierce 7.9, I am unable to distinguish exactly where the fore guy swivel block is attached. Does it snap to the pulpit? If this is true, they gibing the pole would require switching sides would it not? I am thinking of installing a track from the forward hatch on the ...

Trailer

I am a high school teacher with no sailing budget. A guy in NC donated a trailer to us, but it is in very bad shape - so bad that we decided to not put the boat on it even for the winter haulout. I had to make some repairs to it just to get it back to CT. We had hoped to use it for a template, but h...

We had to replace ours and found a match very close at BoatUS. It was a $45 dollar item and we simply got a 2'X2"X1/4" piece of teak to make shims, West 5200, sandpaper and some varnish. One would have a difficult time telling it wasn't custom made - actually, I suppose it was. lol
