Re: Replacement Speed & Depth Instruments
Hi Doug, I have made the switch to RayMarine, and added the relative wind. I chose to put them all on the cabin bulkheads, but that is a personal choice. I raced a friends 7.9 which had in instrument bar installed over the companionway hatch, which was terrific for viewing by all crew. I assume you ...

Re: New gel coat?
Our 7.9 is a 1986, and I always used the three different Maguire's stuff. I think it was "Color Restorer" which I always put on, and off by hand (much Wax-on - Wax-off); then a Polish, followed by a carnauba wax. I put on the last two coats by buffer, but hand rubbed them out. This had wor...

Re: Really Dumb Question - How to Confirm Sail Number?
Guys,
Just to share the actual number from the hull - it is SSU79483L586.
Just a little remaining question- any ideal what the L5 means? I know the boat was built in 86, and I now know the correct sail number is 483.

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it. Especially breaking down the hull numbers on the boat.

Really Dumb Question - How to Confirm Sail Number?
Guys, I have owned the S2 7.9 DD Mau for 10 years and just ordered a new genoa. I gave them my old genny and they made the new one, and gave it the same number as the old - #483. Then a good fellow sailor at the club took some pictures of my boat and, in looking at them, I am astounded to find that ...

Re: in the process of buying boat
Hi Northerner, Sure hope you bought the 7.9. Just for reference, we have towed our 7.9, on a galvanized Cooper trailer, behind a V8 Mountaneer. It definitely had a hernia getting started, and would struggle on hills, but less something bigger. We now pull it with a 4x4 Tahoe which is outstanding, ha...

Re: STEAMING LIGHT
Stef,
I put on exactly the unit that Tom recommended - with one addition. I got it from a Canadian outfit, and with LED for the steaming part of the light, and it was less money. I found the unit and the company on Ebay.

Tim,
I think I'll try the handsome natural dowel to avoid color clash.
Thanks,

Re: Boat preparation checklist
Race Prep - We have the dinette table, which we take off for racing, plus extra sails that I don't think we will need depending on the winds that day. On my friends boat, we would pull the outboard off the motor mount and place it on the cabin floor, covered with an army blanket. I crewed on another...

Re: STEAMING LIGHT
Guys, I agree that the old aluminum can light snagged lines all the time. I installed one of the Aqua Signal units last year (black plastic, where tabs are bent back to the sides of the mast. It is kinda big, but I had no problem with lines hanging up on it at all. I also got the version (from a Can...

Re: Rudder Hold-up Device
Tim,
Absolutely agree, and I learned it the hard way. A somewhat related question for you - do you use a dowel to lock the rudder down or the stock stainless pin? I have stayed with the stainless pin, but have seen it bent at times.

Re: Rudder Hold-up Device
Mark, You're right, that until you try it, it's not really intuitive. Your rudder should have a small hole on the trailing edge, about 10 inches down from the top. You would first pull the stainless pin out of the rudder cheeks which lock the rudder down. This allows the rudder to swing up. Now to o...

Tim,
Thanks for the nice job on the rudder holder-upper (my daughter's term). It is excellent, well done, and well worth the money.
