Re: Rudder Hold-up Device
I used a wooden dowel for my first two years with Zafu, thanks to you guys. Early this spring, however, there was a pretty big storm on the lake, so I moved the boat out from the dock to a mooring. Just from wind and water, the dowel broke. The rudder kicked up and started banging against the outboa...

Re: Rudder Hold-up Device
Okay, I'm embarrassed (but what's new).
When I bought my boat last year, one of these came with it and it looked like a rudder lifter. If it's a hold-up device, how does it connect?

Zafu (194...I think)

Re: Careening
Thanks, Dave, you're a gem. "USING THE BOAT is the most important thing for maintaining a clean[ish] bottom. Sitting unused in the slip or on a mooring will cause growth on ANYTHING" not only explains a lot (which, foolishly, I just hadn't thought of), but it gives me an excuse for why I h...

Re: Careening
Thanks, Dave. I thought I could at least get a voucher for that lunch! I am sailing on one of the New York fingerlakes, and this is my second year with Zafu (#195). She had been sitting in the North Carolina woods for six years, and I had to do a lot of work to get her shipshape. Following the sugge...

Re: Careening
What about using the jib halyard and raising the keel...or am I just asking for trouble?

Careening
Does anyone careen their 7.9 for bottom cleaning? I usually go in the water, but following a recent surgery (that has kept me from sailing), I'm thinking of careening it using the main halyard and a nearby dock. I used to do this with a J boat...but it was lighter.

But...
Is 35 inches really enough to allow someone to climb out of the water and over the transom?
195 came with a ladder that looks like this, but the bottom rung was barely in the water and no one is able to climb up it.
Is there a trick?

Swim Ladder
Does anyone know of a swim ladder that works for the S2 7.9?

autohelm installation
Does anyone use an autohelm on their 7.9? I'm thinking of an ST1000+ or an ST2000, but can't imagine that it has a long enough throw for mounting on the cockpit wall. Marc (Zafu #195)

Ahhh....so first I'll look at the main and see if it has a flattening grommet. Then, the blocks can serve one purpose or the other (or both). Since you've got #8 and I've got #195, maybe they changed the arrangement. I've got a double sheave on the starboard side of the boom, about 1/3 of the way fr...

Flattening reefs and other tales of the sea
Now I know why I was having so much trouble understanding the boom! It's been about 15 years since I sailed on a boat with a flattening reef, and I'm now realizing that the wired, 3-block assemblies must be for a flattener. I assume the wire goes all the way to the grommet, pls let me know if I'm wr...

masthead vs. fractional
Sorry, I'm confused. I've only seen my new 7.9 once (hey, it's winter here!) but it looked like it had one jib halyard and one masthead spinnaker halyard. Did some boats have a fractional rig (earlier or later) or was I looking at the mast wrong? The online spec sheet lists one jib halyard and one s...

missing specs on outhaul?
I'm one of the new guys, about to rig my 7.9 from scratch (the previous owner stripped everything except the centerboard line!). In looking at the spec sheet, I don't see anything for the outhaul. I understand from the previous owner that there is an internal something:1 system outhaul system in the...
