I have one brand new from the last run that I never installed. I bought it as a spare part - in the event that the original failed. Still new in the box. If anyone is interested in purchasing it, give me a call -

Re: PHRF Ratings Appeal
Following up on the PHRF ratings - are there any regions that rate the inboard models 6 seconds slower than the outboard versions? Here on the Chesapeake, the IB rates only 3 seconds slower - while many regions use a 6 second offset for Olson 30's, J29's and other boats built with inboard and outboa...

Re: Deck repair
Repairing this from inside the cabin is preferable and not difficult. I used a right angle grinding wheel to cut deep enough to cut through the cloth and after peeling away the old glass, used a chisel to remove the wet balsa. Instead of balsa, I used triple-cut closed cell foam - half inch will do....

Re: Displacement / weight question
Bob; I checked out your link to the DISC website - pretty cool. Gives me some ideas on breathing a little life into our local club newsletter, which is published monthly for the Magothy River. http://www.magothysailing.com We had the misfortune of having an accidental drowning during a race in 2008....

Re: Inboard to outboard
Sorry Bob - what I meant was that I agree with your observation about the 3 second difference as administered by PHRF - not enough of a time differential to make the inboards competitive under ChesBay PHRF.
Did not mean to inply that your opinion stinks - just the opposite.

Re: Inboard to outboard
Bob; AT the moment, I'm racing in my driverway! The boat has been on a trailer for two years undergoing one thing after another - mostly et core repairs. I promised myself to get it in the water this year, and the last thing to do (this season) is fix the rudder. When that's done, we'll be on the Ma...

Re: Displacement / weight question
Perhaps the 7.9 class shoud put up a slate of members to run for office! The BOZOs in DC can't seem to figure out much of anythng except how to print money and spend money it doesn't have. There's a gunkhole near Reagan National Airport just outside of DC that is home to a number of shallow draft sa...

Dave;
both numbers are divisible by three - problem is just that you don't know Washington DC math!

Re: Inboard to outboard
Bob; Where did you place the replacement ballast? Was any located near the keel or did most of it go in the engine box? Did you use lead bars? What would you estimate the weight of the engine, and other gear to be that was removed? I would have guessed that the difference in weight, once you added b...

Re: Displacement / weight question
Thanks Tom. Fortunately on the Chesapeake, the 7.9's have a standard (base) rating, then add 3 second increments for pole penalty, oversized sails etc or subtract for prop gear and roller furling. The 7.9 class hands out a weight credit allowance - and I've never been sure how significant that is. I...

Displacement / weight question
What happens to the PHRF 7.9 rating when a boat originally equipped with an inboard replaces it with an outboard? I have read that Tiara had 200 pounds less ballast on the inboards, so if the engine is pulled and replaced with an outboard, you could end up with a net loss in weight of 130 pounds aft...

Re: Rudder repair or replace?
Dave; The real benefit of being able to use these boards is that 10 years ago, we wouldn't have been able to even discuss the finer points of many such issues. Had you not brought up the use of carbon fiber to enhance the design flaws in the head/blade section, I would probably have just glassed the...

Re: Rudder repair or replace?
Dave; You have a great deal more experience in this area than most amateurs on this board, including me - even though I have been making minor epoxy repairs over the last 30 years. My question(s) may seem stupid to you, but they are important to me. I am not embarrased to say "I don't know"...

Re: Rudder repair or replace?
OK, but a couple thousandths of an inch doesn't matter much to me. What I was attempting to resolve was this: bonding the carbon fiber between two layers of cloth would provide adhesion to two surfaces that will absorb and transfer load more uniformly than just one, therefore be a stronger assembly ...
