Another trick is to wrap a layer or two of glass around the batten and cover with epoxy, then drill your mounting holes, same at the other end.

Doug RiggingOnly, in Fair Haven Ma, just did mine. I gave them the old rigging, and used the open style bronze turnbukles they reccommended. New cascade style spectra backstay also.
