Re: Cracked rudder
Will be attempting a repair before replacing blade. An earlier thread (Rudder pivot hole elongated) described a bushing replacement as 5/8" ID. My pivot bolt is 1/2". The bushing sounds large or is that just to make aligning in the cheek plates easier? I am working on hull 288 in case the ...

Cracked rudder
Has anyone repaired a rudder cracked at the top front, rather than at the bottom of the cheek plates?

HP
I've used a 2-shoke 9.9 Evinrude and replaced it last year with a 4-stroke 9.9 Honda. Both move the me at well at hull speed and thru ocean inlets with big waves. I would not consider less HP for my conditions. Both were 25-inch shafts, necessary to avoid cavitation or flooding in big waves. The Hon...

bottom paint
My boat floats in salt water all year. For bottom paint, I prefer the wearing or ablative paints that keep an active layer of paint on the surface. If you wipe the bottom regularly you will remove it over a season. In the US look for a high copper content and the relatively new biocides that help re...

carpet
My headliner is fine but the carpet on the hull is slightly different in appearance and has apparently shrunk from age or heat, separating from the hull. Although it still looks OK, it is too small to cover the hull when reglued. Suggestions and material sources would also be appreciated. Spencer Ro...

cheek plates
I purchased new cheekplates from S2 last summer after breaking a gudgeon and finding severe corrosion. The repair and S2 contact was posted on the old bulletin board if you can find where they hid it. The replacement will corrode in salt water. Plan B is to replace with stainless, avoiding dissimila...

rudder pin
My original rudder pin, that keeps the rudder from kicking up, has stress fractured. I know that many hard bottom folks use softer than stock pins. I sail in the ocean and soft bottoms so the pin occasionally gets bent on grounding but does no harm to the rudder. I cannot find a source for the 4&quo...

outboard
I have an 84 Evinrude 8 HP with a 25" shaft that refuses to die but is clearly approaching replacement. The exta long shafts appear to be hard to find. Are most folks using 25" or 20" shaft lengths. I regularly navigate tidal inlets with currents and waves where the long shaft helps a...

gudgeon from S2
I got a dusty gudgeon and pintle from S2 last sping as well as replacement cheekplates for the rudder. There was no obvious cause for the failure (well, it was a mild broach) The aluminum cheekplates do not like the stainless gudgeons but at least moored in salt water, the aluminum takes the worst o...
