I have not replaced an engine. However, my 7.9 has a Yanmar 1GM10 rather than the customary BMW. It is a wonderful inboard. Easy to service, a snap to winterize, reliable and provides excellent performance. I think it's likely to be a more practical replacment option.

I like the bleeding suggestion. Another 1GM10 question: following a routine repair/servicing this week, the mechanic reported "intermittent starting." I have not spoken to him directly, but I think he may be referring what I assumed to be "normal" behavior: for the 6 years or so ...

Our 7.9 was has a Yanmar 1GM10 as original equipment (#488, it was built after BMW stopped supplying engines). I cannot speak to the issues involved in replacing the BMW engine with the Yanmar, but I can vouch for the reliability and ease of maintenance of the 1GM10. If you really want an inboard an...
