Re: Rudder repair or replace?

Dave; I had a chance to do a little research today and found some 6 inch wide carbon fiber tape rated @ 3K. The advantage of this tape is that it is unidirectional -not woven. I would tend to think that this ( similar to biaxial mat) has advantages over woven carbon fiber fabric. It would appear tha...

Re: Rudder repair or replace?

Thanks for your comments (or welcome to my nightmare!). The crack(s) along the leading edge of the foil should be the easier repair. I ground the entire edge back about 3 inches on each side and will retape with fresh resin and biaxial 1708. Have used this before with much success. The challenge is ...

Rudder repair or replace?

As Runaway slowly gets back into shape, I have now noticed that the rudder head is hooked to port. The leading edge of the foil has a series of hairline cracks that can be ground out and glassed over to seal properly. That still leaves the head out of alignment. Has anyone had to deal with fixing th...

Re: John? RE Daggerboard rigging diagram

Dave;

Did you mount the 308 to the forward or aft side of the keel tang? My crane is positioned exactly as in your diagram - if viewed from the cockpit, wirh the tang (pin up) guide facing aft as well. In that case, a line exiting from the stb crane shieve would exit below the deck level -

Re: John? RE Daggerboard rigging diagram

Isn't technology great? Thanks Dave and Tom for the collaboration. i did see a similar arrangement showing the line terminating through a hole in the horizontal crane plate - off to the left of the pulley plates (outboard of the upper pulley. Using that arrangement, the terminating line would go fro...

Re: John? RE Daggerboard rigging diagram

Dave; To upload an attachment, look at the second tab below the submit/ preview button at the bottom of the screen. It will allow you to link the file to attach. One problem though is that sometimes large files will not upload as there is a limitation on file size per website design. I found a Harke...

Re: dagger board tackle

Dave; After looking at the Harken 308, question is how did you mount it to the tang? It appears to have the cheekplates riveted together at two points. Did you grind off the rivets and replace with a smooth shaft ss bolt? I get the idea of the ss straps to mfg your own becket, so no problem there. Y...

Re: John? RE Daggerboard rigging diagram

Dave; Where do you place the Harken 308? Sounds to me like you tossed the Schaefer cheek block on the board tang and substituted the Harken w/ ball bearings. Sounds like you kept the original 3:1 arrangement. Did you change out any of the shieves on the tower? Mine came with v shaped aluminum shieve...

Re: John? RE Daggerboard rigging diagram

Daggerboard hardware idea. Well, I finally got around to removing the Schaefer block on the daggerboard tang, and found another just like it at a local used boating equipment shop. If I attach both cheekblocks together on the tang (one on each side) I can fabricate a piece of stainless flat bar to h...

Dang!

I just knew there had to be an easier way! Can you draw a picture of the block & tackle you recommend for flipping over a 7.9?

Re: Core repair - upside down

Here's a second photo with the foam and boards removed leaving the plastic film, which was peeled back leaving the new cloth. Squeegee out the air bubbles and excess resin, then sand / grind / fair cloth edges in preparation for the second layer.

Lather, rinse , repeat.

Core repair - upside down

There has been considerable discussion on this board regarding core repairs and fiberglassing from the underside. Many comments about getting resin dripping and falling cloth can be eliminated by using a layer of heavy plastic under the cloth and then a 3-4 inch piece of cushion foam to keep constan...

Re: Mast step repair

Tom; I used 1/2 inch Coosa Bluewater 126 to repair my step. The plate is not parallel to the deck step, making the step thicker forward than aft. I just posted a step-by-step repair to this site, but on the "daggerboard box" link. As Dave said, it's not hard to fix, just get it dry first. ...

Re: Centerboard box

Two years ago I decided to replace the mast step on #23. I used a battery powered circular saw and cut the fiberglass deck layers connecting the "dots" of the bolt holes. From there use a chisel to peel the glass back and a dremel or other small cutting wheel to cut the corners square. Bel...
