Re: head foil systems
We may be old but we're NOT that old  We raced from 1979 to 2003 on "RUFFIAN" (O'Day 30) and the 170 really drove her! I think we are in for a HUGE surprise and may need to rethink our plans. What sizes and weights of headsails do you use? And what type? What a learning curve  ...

Re: current rigging specs
Dave, why is it more fun to sail with the rope backstay than the old wire and bridle? If we were to lengthen the headstay to 31' 8" how much do we shorten the wire and bridle backstay. Will the main clear the wire backstay. We're reluctant to use rope that will degrade so quickly down here. All...

Re: head foil systems
Dave. We are also used to sailing masthead rig with 170 and smaller main and had to change headsails when the winds came up. Never sailed fractional rig.

Re: head foil systems
I'm missing something - isn't someone on the bow in either case (hanks or head foil)? Dave, I think you had some description some where in the forum about your changing hanked head sails but can't find your comments???

Re: head foil systems
We raced for years with a head foil 2 on our O'Day 30 and loved it much more than hanks. And, I am our foredeck crew. Of course the O'Day was a pretty stable platform with more room on the foredeck. It was always a pain for us to change headsails and with the foil we would pull one up under the othe...

Re: current rigging specs
Sorry, all kinds of thoughts rummaging around our heads as we prepare to buy all new rigging. We think we probably want a straight mast and, if so, we assume the factory specs are the way to go. Any philosophical thoughts on this? We haven't even sailed this boat yet so don't know quite what we want...

Re: current rigging specs
Tim, does the 31' 8" allow for the mast rake/bend that is supposed to make the boat faster. If using max headstay what does one use for the backstay and bridle (not using the spectra cascading system)? Megan

Re: current rigging specs
Thanks Tim - We got them from your site. Are they also the current rigging specs? Is there a max forestay length?

current rigging specs
We are replacing the standing rigging on our 1982 7.9. The current rigging was measured for mast rake or bend and the head stay has been replaced with a roller furler. We don't want to send this stuff off to riggingonly. Does anyone have the current rigging specs. I know you are talking about changi...

Thanks Dave. We have appreciated all the info you provide on the site. It will be helpful as we try to tune the rig and start sailing. Megan

Re: Shrouds
Dave, we have decided to replace all our standing rigging and have talked to Riggingonly. We are measuring and have come up with pretty much what the Rigging Specifications from S2 state with turnbuckles 2/3 out, except for the backstay and bridle. Our measurements: Forestay: 31'-4 3/4" Upper: ...

Re: Shrouds
Lost a home we were selling and had 5 1/2' in our new one, but we were one of the luck ones. Had a structure left that we gutted and refinished. Decided it was time to have some fun - and so the "new" hole in the water in which to pour money!
