Re: Rig Tune

I have a few questions about rig tuning: 1. The Doyle Boston guide has a tuning guide for an "old" mast and a "new" mast. How do I know which I have? My serial number is 430. 2. I assumed that I have an old mast, and I've used the published numbers for my Loos "B" gauge...

Re: Tight Spinnaker Reaches

My thought on tight spinnaker reaches is "just say no". In the Figawi race on Memorial Day, we were playing cat and mouse with a J-24. They were ahead of us when they put up their spinnaker in a 90 degree reach. We blew by them with a genoa up. We were five minutes ahead by the time they g...

Re: Standing rigging

So what is the legal forestay measurement? In the posts below, one says 31'10" and another says 31'8". I looked in the class rules, and I don't see the forestay measurement. I guess I could calculate it, but my trig is pretty rusty after two decades of non-use. Cheers, Bruce Baker GIT-R-DO...

Re: Standing rigging

When I read the maximum headstay length is 31'10", I assume that means pin to pin?

Thanks,

I'd love to crew on somebody else's boat in the NOODs. I think my team is a year away from going head to head with you all.

Cheers,

Re: spinnaker handling

I guess this question falls under the heading "spinnaker handling:" We have recently started launching the spinnaker out of the main hatch. I understand that this is standard practice for our class, and it definitely helps on the dousing end. However, on the launch, we find that the spinna...

Re: Standing rigging

This is a semi-related question. I just put new standing rigging on my boat. As I was setting it up, I wondered "what happens if you break a forestay on this boat?" My old Catalina 25 had lowers both forward and aft. I did break a forestay on that boat, and the mast did not come tumbling d...

Outboard Motor Bracket

I'm trying to replace the board that my outboard motor clamps onto. West Marine says they can get me a new plastic board to replace the old wooden one provided that I tell them the manufacturer and model number. Unfortunately,I can't find any writing of any kind on the bracket. Any ideas? Thanks, Br...

Is there a source for hatch cover rails? My cover is fine, but the rails are pretty beat up.

Re: STEAMING LIGHT

This is only slightly related. My mast lights are intermittent. Two years ago, when I bought the boat, the mast head light didn't work but the steaming light did. Now it's the reverse. I suspect that the problem is the fitting on the deck. I cleaned everything out and lightly sanded the prongs, but ...

Re: shroud replacement

Ok. I pulled the old standing rigging off the boat and am sending it to JSI for replacement. Their quote of $534 is quite reasonable. Here is my question: The top shrouds have "c" clamps above and below the spreaders. Are these original equipment, or did the previous owner put them on. Sho...

Re: Spinnaker questions

Who reaches, you say? Those of us unlucky enough to sail on the Potomac River. It's too narrow to set true courses. The wind often blows north or south, but when it blows east or west, we reach.

Spinnaker questions

1. One of my numbers is coming unglued from my spinnaker. Do you have a recommendation on how to glue it back on? 2. This is maybe not a maintenance question, but it's a spinnaker question: What should be the optimal shape for a spinnaker for reaching? Doyle / Boston says that their big-shouldered s...

Re: shroud replacement

What's the standard way to do this? Send them the old? Do your own measurement? I'm not sure I trust myself to do the latter, but the former requires pulling the boat out of service. Anyway, I'll probably do this over the winter since the season is coming to a close. I assume JSI has the right t-bal...

Re: Boom Hardware

Somebody mentioned reefing. I'm wondering how the reef line attaches to the boom. The line goes out of the end of the boom, through the sail, and then what? My old Catalina 25 had a cleat you could tie the line to, or else you could tie two half hitches around the boom. With my bolt-rope footed main...
