Fleet #9

Post by P Naber »

I recently tried to contact Bill Pribe of Fleet #9 in the Toledo area. I dialed the number listed on this site and was told there was no such person at that number. A couple of days ago, another 7.9 owner told me that Fleet #9 no longer exists. Is this true? If so, what is the closest Fleet to Monroe, MI area that I can participate in?

Thanks ahead of time for any information.

I would think that the closest fleet would be Fleet #7. They are listed on their website as Lake St. Clair, Michigan and Ontario, though most of the boats are located in the Detroit area.

I would be interested to know how many boats there are in Western Lake Erie basin. We have 2 at our club in Kingsville Ontario, myself (Underdog) and Frank Foote(Yawanna), and I know that Stephanie Schniederman (Ni Modo) sails in your area. There's also Chris Craig (Silver Streak) out of Grosse Ille. If there are any other boats out there let us know.
Maybe we could try to get these boats together at a few of the regattas in the area (Bay Week, Mills Race??). I know Grosse Ille YC has a one-design regatta held the second weekend of September and they are looking for other classes to attend. At one time they had a S2 7.9 start but this year there was only an Abbott 33 class.

Get your local sail club to agree to a one design start if you can provide more than 5 boats.

It's worked VERY well up here at NSSC in Lake St. Clair. We had another great series this year that every enjoyed with alot of close racing.

Then have the sail club offer free docking for folks coming in out of town. After all, the point is to race, not to make $$.

Right now, I only know of three 7.9s in my area; Ni Modo (I crewed for Stephanie this summer), a boat called Sky King (?), and my boat (Cheap Thrills). I'll have to look for Chris's boat when we're back in the water next season. There are two more 7.9s for sale at Toledo Beach, one is Mike Dye's (Sail Naked) and I'm not sure what the other one is. If I can round up enough boats I'm sure we can get a one design start together.

We plan on doing the Mills next year and anyother race we can. I agree it would be nice to keep the communication lines open and get a good group of boats together for some of the other regattas.

Nice to meet you Mark and Tom and thank you for the information. I'll check out the Fleet #7 website tonight. See you on the water!
