CCR vs NOODS vs Equaliser

Hello all,

We are completely new to racing, and could use some help understanding what CCRs, NOODs, and regattas are all about. We know what the acronyms stand for, but what are these races for? What are they like? How good should we be to show up at one?

It would be wonderful to sail with some other 7.9s just to learn what we need to know, how far we have to go, and share some beers, but we are really in the dark about what's what with these races. Could someone shed some light on what these races are all about, the level of competition, the mood, and things like that?
