I am wondering the benefits or draw backs of having a boat with an inboard deisel or without. Do boats with a deisel get a credit for their rating. How does it affect the speed. Any S2 7.9 with inboard deisels winning in their class

Take a look at the discussion under "minimum weights" in the rules section for discussion of the performance differential. Outboards are clearly preferred for one-design racing. If you race PHRF, you should get an extra 6 seconds a mile handicap which keeps you very competitive.

If you're going to motor a lot, I think the inboards definitely perform better under power. On the other hand, the engines are getting older and repair or replacement of a diesel is more expensive.

If you find a boat you love, buy it; engine doesn't make that much difference.
