Mourning the loss of Bruce Goldsmith, Lightning Class Legend

Post by stephanie »

The sailing community recently lost one its all time greats, Bruce Goldsmith, known as "The Bruin" of International Lightning Class fame.

If this does not link, please go to the International Lighting Class for more information on Bruce.

In fact, the only way to get information about Bruce was to either have known him or to have known about him, as he never spoke about his accomplishments unless asked. Bruce won the Worlds in the Lightning Class and two Pan Am games. Bruce was a guy who always shared his knowledge and tips with others, welcomed and accepted all who were interested in learning about the sport, always smiled and enjoyed life. He mentored many great sailors in the sport, who later became legends themselves.

Bruce was taken from us in a recent tragic accident in a regatta on Lake Erie, involving an accidental jibe, which I can say, can happen to the MOST experienced, as Bruce was.

For those of you who knew Bruce, a memorial service is taking place at Devils Lake Yacht Club in Michigan on June 30.

From the S2 7.9 class to the Lightning Class and to Bruce's family, crew and friends, we wish you healing in your loss and know that Bruce would only want us to continue to race, sail, smile and be happy. God Bless.

I did not know Bruce but after reading the stories and notes I feel that I now know him.

Thanks for posting this message and the links to his information. I am saddened by his loss.
