Chicago NOODS - June 10 - 12 Add'l Prize

Post by Tom Elsen »

We've all taken some time off from Chicago.
Time to put this fun regatta city back on the map!
Chicago NOOD regatta
June 10-12, 2011

Talked to Jeff Padnos this week. K2 is in.
We're in on Hard Tack.
Roger Gamache has expressed an interest.

What about your program? Rode/Wolves? Gutsy? JeffB? Mootzy? Dr.L? NashvilleJames? DerbyCityBoys? PeterBlue?
Assume that Belmont (north) is still preferred to Burnham (south) - Easier. Cheaper. Better Parking etc etc etc.

I will create some sort of 'special' prize for the regatta.
Suggestions both for the 'contest' and the prize welcome. Post 'em here.
Best wishes,
Tom

How about a new Genoa, purchased by the past prez. (can I use it before we give it away?, I'll take off the numbers!)
Skyhawk is contemplating coming. The last Chicago NOOD we did was when I launched my fore deck and boat partner in to the drink on a gybe broach. So I have some convincing to do.
Check out the Horizon True Camera Mounts for video taping on board while racing! www.horizontrue.com

Maybe I can help Jeff:
For anybody who's interested, this is excellent entertainment. Come to watch! It's reason enough to sail the Chicago NOODs. Plus, with the Horizon True video system, you'll be able to see this feat again and again! Kind of you to offer, Jeff.

Do you think that was convincing enough?

That said, the jibe/broach/dunk was an outstanding act of selflessness. As I recall, you were quite a few lengths in the lead. It would have been too obvious if you'd have dropped the kite and waited for us to catch up.
Kudos to Mike as well. He put on quite a show mid-air. Is that where he got the nickname "Flick"?
Best wishes,
Tom

Need some suggestions regarding logistics. Where's the launch ramp? Diversy then motor to Belmont with rig down? Very much prefer Belmont... although remember that trailers aren't allowed on the Drive.

Roger, hope to see you in CHI. Logistics for Belmont (if that's what we choose) are

Put in at Diversey
The exit is Fullerton, then North on Canon to entrance toward the north end of the harbor.
Here the map for the north end of Diversey:
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=fire ... 5&t=h&z=17
Motor to Belmont with mast down.

After launch take truck and trailer 2/3 mile north to Belmont.
Diversey Pkwy or Canon to N Sheridan Rd, to Belmont.
You can park your truck and store your trailer in the lot just south of the Harbor and the dry sailing storage area, here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?client=fire ... 5&t=h&z=17

BTW, you can tow a trailer on Lake Shore Drive. You can't have a commercial trailer there. But not all cops know that.
Anybody else coming up the drive - If for any reason you get stopped for having a trailer, tell them that you called the city information line (311) and you asked for the City of Chicago Traffic Enforcement division. They told you that trailers on Lake Shore Drive were permitted on passenger vehicles, but NOT permitted on "B" class commercial vehicles. Here is the text from the Municipal Code of Chicago: Sect 9-72-020 Operation of vehicles restricted.
"It shall be unlawful to operate any vehicle upon any boulevard (a) when such vehicle is used for carrying freight or other goods and merchandise for commercial purposes.......,"

The reasons a people have voted for the north location in the past
- Easy access to vehicle and trailer for gear storage / repairs / restocking etc.
- The North clubhouse is SO much more welcoming and a great place to wait out weather problems
- The RC actually calls things ashore instead of sending everybody out when it's
- Proximity to the race course - obviously the north course
- Nobody got a $100+ ticket for sitting on the sea wall, with their feet on the boat, drinking a beer
- Obviously the downside is access to the main clubhouse / beerfest / regatta "food"
Best wishes,
Tom

Relentless is registered. Lets get a class this year. The S2 7.9 class is now selectable from the drop down menu. It was not available last week.

Late fee Deadline is this coming Monday, the 23rd. Great race with great views of the city. We have four boats so far. I'm guessing we need at least 2 more boats to get a class. Anybody interested or thinking about it? You can race the same amount of races as 1-2 of your regular series in one weekend. Great experience and fun. I live in the City, let me know if you have any questions.

I regret that while I can get crew for Detroit, I don't have crew for Chicago. Regretfully, we'll miss Chicago this year... and build for next year. Next event for us (after Detroit) will be the Canadian Championships. Also going to try to get to the U Gotta Regatta (aka Little Traverse Bay YC Annual Regatta), although that will definitely be a PHRF event.
