Post by richard12815 »

Does someone have information of the function of the pully and cam cleat on the S2 Boom?

I have an S2 7.9, and I have a question about some of the components of the boat, in particular the boom.

Attached are links to relevant pictures,

The boom near the mast has cams and pulleys on both sides of the boom, and at the end of the boom, near the stern, there are three pulleys (see picture). I am almost certain that the pulley in the center near the end of the boom at the stern is for the outhaul. But the two pulleys at the end of the boom near the stern on either side of the center pulley are for the reefing of the mainsail and that the reefing is controlled by a line at the front of the boom at the mast.

Is this CORRECT?

Also, am I correct that the correct way to rig these functions is for the port cam/pulley and the starboard pulley/cam each control a different level of reefing of the main sail.

See attached documents.

Apologies for the late reply. The photos on your post didn't attach, so not sure what the images are meant to show. But yes: the center pulley in the boom is for the outhaul. The others are for reefing (on mine that's set up on the starboard side of the boom) and the port side is supposed to be for attaching to the topping lift. I don't use a topping lift on my boat, and I see a lot of the class boats use a boomkicker or similar...or just use the main halyard to support the boom when the mainsail is down. I guess the reason to not use a topping lift is speed -- the line is extra weight aloft, and a flat 7.9 is a fast 7.9 so better to get all of the weight possible off the mast...

Hope that helps!

MY 7.9 also has topping lift line/cleat on the port side of the boom, I use it.

It is handy to be able to adjust boom height for lounging around at the dock.

And on the starboard side is the reefing line.
