stuck daggerboard

Post by bob williams »

After being grounded while trying to back into a marina slip,I now cannot raise the board as it is wedged at the leading edge and forward starboard side of board.(the board can only come up 6-8inches from fully down before it binds. Was going to have yard try to pull board aft with lines on a cherry picker. Any other ideas? Previously,I've tried to remove board for edge damage repair and have been unable to do so Thanks for any helpBob

Hi Bob, first I would find out why it is stuck before you start shifting it around! I can think of about 3 reasons.
1.) The worst first, could be damage to the trunk which could lead to serious leak. The shims could be caught in the damaged area and causing it to bind.
2.) There may have been damage or a splitting of the keel causing it to be too fat to fit through the opening. Comes up part of the way then jams.
Check under water and this should be visible, then you can chip away the damaged area enough to get the keel up and out for repair.
3.) Or as simple as the pulley system on the keel and line is jaming. I have had this happen, but I could get the keel most the way up.

Hope this helps some, maybe others can chime in with their advice.

Bob

Last year we got ours stuck going the other way. We used Dawn dish soap to lubricate the trunk. We were only able to get the keel up 6-8" to begin with. We just kept working it up and down until we finally got it up.

Boat has been on the hard 12 months. Can raise it to within 24 inches of complete.Buyer of boat can't put it on a trailer this way. Trunk opening completely filled with board (no gaps whatsoever) Have used detergent multiple times No help. Inside shims snug to wall of trunk. Yard says doesn't know what else to try. Have flooded trunk with hose .no change .I have replacement shims but don't think that would make any difference since board seems "swollen" 2ft from bottom.HELP Thanks Bob

Board has delaminated. Probable water intrusion and then freezing.

Gent in our club had the same issue this spring.
He borrowed a cradle from another (non-7.9) boat,
put his 7.9 on it, and had room to work on it from below.
(with the board all the way down)
I think you can reach and work on all the de-lamination
areas that way - and once you correct that, the board
can be pulled out the top and finished off . .
