At the recommendation of my crew I was going to pull my winches and give them a good going over this winter. The Genoa winch drum came off pretty easy so I am planning on Lubing them in place. I tried removing the self tailing cabin top winches but the bolts started to spin and I did not get too far.
Can anyone give me guidance on pulling the drum on the self tailing winches.
Also I want to make sure the winches are not a place where water can get into the core. Can anyone tell me how the holes are sealed?
Thanks
Terry
Hey Terry - I seal any / all bolt holes with 3M 5200. My method is to apply the 5200 to the bolts on the section where it will go through the core, then slowly work the bolts into the hole rotating them gently as you go. It's not a bad idea to apply a small ring of 5200 on top of the cabin (around each hole) before you set the winch foot back in place, as well. Tom

What kind of self tailing winches do you have? In the Harkens there is a large flat bladed screw in the winch handle socket that needs to come out first, then after pulling a few parts you need to remove some allen screws to get the whole winch apart. I don't know how the Lewmar self tailers come apart.
The deck under all of the winches is cored and the holes are not sealed. On my boat it looks like the winches were installed while the gelcoat was still a little green as the winches created a depression in the surface, that and some sealant seemed to do the job. My core was dry when I pulled the winches last winter, but as a precaution I drilled larger holes, filled them with thickened epoxy and then re-drilled the mounting holes. I also replaced the bolts and installed larger fender washers for backing. My boat was built in 1982.
Good luck,
Dave

Re: Winches
The winches are Barient 19 self tailing - I will try giving the self tailing are a counter clockwise tap. Advice is welcome.Coldduck wrote:At the recommendation of my crew I was going to pull my winches and give them a good going over this winter.
