compression post

OK I have been through a FEW masts in the past few years.The first one came down in a bad collision,The next one came down in 25 knots breeze and bad welds to the speader strap.I bought hull 147 for the mast and some spare parts,well I stipped the mast down and there is a dent in the mast from the speader compressing into the mast.why did my first mast have a compression post ?the other two do not one mast was made in 2009 no post and the other in 82 the first mast is a 86 and had a post.
