CB trunk "plugs"

Post by J.D. Kloss »

My boat, #8, has what appear to be hard rubber rectangular plugs (about 3/4 x 3/4 x 3 inches) fore and aft of the centerboard trunk. They seem to be shock absorbers or bushings. I noticed that the aft "plug" has dropped down from flush with the hull. Could this be a source of water intrusion?

Can anybody give me a better idea of what these plugs do?

Thanks,

Jim Kloss

Hey Jim - Could you please give a bit more of a description, or maybe post a pic? I don't think I've ever seen this before.
Best wishes,
Tom

Jim....those plugs are kind of like shock absorbers to prevent damage to the back and front of CB trunk bottom opening. When you hit something with your board the back and front of trunk opening take a beating.

Mine are little Delrin 3/4 x 3/4 x 2 or 3 rectangular sections. They can slip down from the top of their
pockets, and they can be carefully pried out and replaced. I put a slurry of West System epoxy and 406 colloidal silica in the thoroughly cleaned out pocket before I tap my delrin in. Then wipe up any excess epoxy so there are no bulges oozing into trunk. The epoxy holds the delrin in but does not stick to it.

I do remember some cracks and punkiness at top of one of my empty pockets (probably aft one) after I pried the bumpers out.

I kinda roto rooted the loose cracked material out with a drill and burr and filled the void with the same West System mix as above. MAKE SURE YOU SLIDE YOUR NEW BUMPER PIECE IN WHILST THE EPOXY MIXTURE IS WET OR YOU WILL LOSE THE NICE LITTLE RECTANGULAR POCKET GROOVE AND IT WILL BE A @##$$% TO PUT IT BACK.

Have fun...Doug
