Backstay Questions

Post by BarryE »

I need to replace my old. worn, frayed, damaged, Kevlar backstay. It actually snapped last year while tuning the rig forcing me to revert to the cable for the rest of the season. Question: What is everyone using these days?

I sent a drawing of what I needed for my back stay to RIGGING ONLY and asked for a qoute.
They're good people to work with. I'm please with their work and price.

I searched 'Dyneema' on Amazon and got numerous hits. Turns out it's used on off road vehicle front bumper winches to rescue stuck vehicles. At a price equal to pennies on the dollar compared to marine prices. Then I went to YouTube to find instructional videos on splicing. Ended up with nice multi-part back stay at a great price and learned something in the process.

After some discussion and research I ordered a new backstay from my local chandler. 6mm Dynema with chafe cover etc. Shout out to Tony at Great Lakes Marine Outfitters (Port Huron, MI) for the excellent work.
