Mast raising and lowering

Post by MartyW »

Any tips or advice / lowering the mast single-handedly?
I've done it with the main sheet block and tackle a couple of times, but it is such a heavy pull, and with no cam cleat, It's hard to take a rest in the middle. I would love to trailer the boat to more places, but it's this aspect of the process that is daunting. There has to be a better way.

I have done it several times with instructions from fleet 7 on this website. It's a bit of work getting everything setup, but it works.

I have also thought about a system I saw at Annapolis sailboat show for a different sailboat. An extension pole from the tongue of the trailer with a roller at the top. You then avoid using the spinnaker pole. Hull 46 had a setup like I just mentioned and using a remote control winch motor. I have never seen it in use, or if it even works well.

I have done it several times, thanks to what I have learned on this class website. I use the main sheet and run it aft to the Primary cockpit winches. Works great.

I do think I will convert to spectra line someday, instead of the threaded rod. Easier to work with, and store. But I wanted to learn on the tried and tested system first.
