Keel line

Post by mike »

last nite our keel line broke with the board about 1/2 way up and slamed into the down position. When I removed the cover I realized both the front & rear plastic slides had broken off. I found an old post on the repair process and will complete the repair soon.
Are there any ramifications on continuing sailing until I can make repairs??
Also, the tang connected to the keel has only 1 sheave. Should this be 2 sheaves? Any Comments would be appriciatd!

When we dropped our keel to the bottom all of the hardware on the stem sheared off as well. We needed to get a piece of hardware with a rope through one of the remaining holes. Then we removed the boom and created some cribbing from 4x4's on the fore and aft sides of the keel. Then we put the boom back on the cribbing and hooked a heavy duty snatch block to it. We then took the rope we put on the stem of the keel and ran it through the snatch block to the keel winch. we made a clamp to hold the keel up above the boat so we could repair the damage. The clamp consisted of 2 4x4's and 2 3/4" ready rods. The 4x4's need to be a few inches longer than the keel on the fore and aft sides of the keel as well as tapered a bit to matches the taper of the keel and I drilled 2 holes at the ends of the 4x4"s(Keep the 4x4's over the keel trunk walls so the weight gets distributed). I ran the ready rod through the 2 holes forward of the keel and a bolt through the aft two holes which created a clamp which squeezed the keel tight enough to work on it. It looked like a big Jorgensen woodworking clamp when we were done. But it worked. We did this under the supervision of a structural engineer I know which added a little confidence to the project. This saved us from having so pull the boat and find a place to work on it. Hope that helps.
