cabin wiring

Post by Jim Kloss »

Anybody know the color coding of the original wiring? Or rebuilt the electrical panel?

I'm not sure if there was ever an official color code, but I suppose one way to find out is to compare notes on our boats.

The main wiring in my boat (Hull #493, built in 1986) does appear to be original and I have traced them around the boat and labeled them in various spots.

In my boat the wire bundles are:
- Orange (with black stripe) for Running Lights circuit
- Purple (with grey stripe) for Cabin Lights circuit
- Grey (no stripe) for Navigation Lights circuit
- Grey (no stripe) for Anchor Light

A 'miscellaneous' circuit appears to be not original in my boat and provides power to instruments, which uses a red wire.

Sort of annoying that both the nav lights and anchor light circuits use the same exact wire type for their 'hot' side.

Hope that helps! And it's quite possible that these colors will vary by boat/by year.

Yep. Seems each boat is different. For #20:

The back of my original panel is shown the album linked below
Cabin lights - dark blue
Anchor LIght - Tan
Steaming Light - Gray
Running Lights - Orange

I built a new cabinet/panel this summer and rewired the boat as I wanted to add in GPS, Stereo, VHF and autopilot on their own breakers. Ended up with what's in this album:

I like the electronics cabinet idea. I might build something like this over winter for holding my radio and putting some extra circuits, maybe just to the starboard of the stairs. Thanks for the idea!
