Sanding and painting the bottom

Post by DougH »

Has anyone here used the GoHoist with Brownell style stands to lift the boat off the trailer for bottom work? I want to sand/fair the bottom because the PO put on many coats of Interprotect (a good thing) but never bothered to smooth it (not so good) so the bottom is not as smooth and fair as it should be. The reason I am considering the GoHoist is so I can do the project in my back yard and take my time instead of taking the boat to the marina and using their lift. TIA

Also, it looks like the GoHoist should be able to remove the daggerboard for similar refinish work.

Have not tried a GoHoist but I have used the adjustable stands to get the hull 6 inches or so above the cradle. Should work for your purposes.

I have used a bottle jack to raise the boat high enough to move the trailer pads out of the way. One side at a time of course. Not a lot of room to work but pretty easy to do.

When you are on the stands, is the boat entirely supported by the stands and not touching the trailer? How many stands do you use and approximately where do you place them?

I normally lift one end only 6 inches or so to do my sanding and painting. Be sure to chock the trailer wheels if not connected to your vehicle. I use two stands placed close to the cradle. Winding up each stand a few turns alternatively on each stand. Grease the screws liberally. Super simple.

Sounds like a good technique. Thanks!
