Need a Forward Hatch Cover

Post by eodum »

It seems a lot of sizes have changed compared what was posted on the site several years ago.

I am trying to make a comparison:

https://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?p ... 7&id=48169
https://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?p ... &id=548876
https://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?p ... 7&id=48154

Does anyone have any feel for comparison of these three? I called Bowmar to try and get more info....less than helpful would be a kind description. But she alluded to the cut out on their equivalent series to Lewmar is now 17.25"....I don't have a lot of confidence she knew what she was talking about.

I am wanting the hatch to have a screen and just trying to make sure it fits everything. Seems like the Lewmar is going to need to be shimmed...not a big deal, but there appears to be a cost difference and trying to make sure I am comparing apples and apples.

I replaced mine with the Lewmar 40, medium profile with a flange. It’s a little stouter than the low profile, not a lot of difference in price. I like the Lewmar hatch better than the Bomar because the frame is aluminum instead of plastic. Good luck.

I replaced my Bomar with a new Lewmar Series 40 Ocean hatch that I scored cheap on eBay. It was the flat style (no flange). I wasn't comfortable with how close the screw holes where to the edge of the opening so crafted some 1/2 inch edges made out of HDPE cutting board material. Looks good and fits nice with no leaks yet. Would go with the flange version if I could get a do-over.

...Oh, yeah, and make sure you use way more caulk than you think you should use!
