Replacement for 7.9 foredeck hatch
Does anyone know a make and model number for replacing the 7.9 foredeck hatch?
re foredeck hatch replacement
I replaced mine on #56 (@last) this summer. I used a Lewmar Ocean series 40 (lewmar#39640050) with flat base that I got from PYacht.com for around $425 I think(they had best price). It is a little overkill for the boat as they make two other versions of the hatch (low and mid profile) which would work fine and cost less, I believe the later production run of 7.9's used the low profile version. It was a pretty easy install, the fasteners are slightly smaller diameter and located in different spots so some redrilling was required-also there was a very slight dimensional difference between the two hatches such that when installing the new one you have to be careful that the new screw holes are not too close to the opening (and have nothing to grip to!). The one I bought was the flat model (because I wanted the easy install) and as a result on the inside of the hatch you now see the gelled surface and edge of the headliner-there are a few things you can do for this too. All in all a pretty easy project though and considerably stronger than the factory supplied one.
Foredeck Hatch Replacement
Thanks @last, I had replaced the original hatch with a GRAY hatch after the lens to frame joint started leaking on the original. The GRAY hatch had a molded one piece cover. After 15 years, I guess the Florida sun got to it; it shattered after a crew member stepped on it. It scratch his leg pretty bad. I have cut a tempary cover useing 1/4 inch MARINE-TUFF POLYMER (a product like "STARBOARD") and used 3M 5200 to "glue" it to the remains of the lid. If I find the 1/4 inch is not strong enough, I will replace it with 1/2 inch while I keep looking. Chuck

I replaced mine with the Lewmar low profile two years ago. I got lucky and picked up a new hatch on Ebay under $200 including shipping. @last is dead on with the screw sizes and fit. I had to make a quick run to West Marine when I discovered the old screws didn't fit. The low profile is sturdy enough for the size and application.

front hatch repair
My 7.9's (#445, Sandusky Sailing Club) front hatch was leaking badly last summer, but on inspection it was due to the deterioration of the seal between the smoked "glass" and the hatch. For about $35 I purchased a new hard plastic "glass" and re-bedded it in the hatch with the special sealer that they use on automobile windshields. Now it works fine.
