I am interested in changing the way my twings work. I've seen a set up on other boats that has a bullseye forward, instead of a block on the toe rail. This ensures that the guy is close to the deck and has a good lead to the twing cleat. Has anyone tried this in the 7.9 class? Anyone got any images they care to share of their set up?
thanks,

Twings

Hi John,
I don’t have any images handy, however I can get some to you. Here is how we re-did our twing system. Basically we used four Harken 29 mm Carbo ti-lite blocks – these are cheap and tied directly to the toe rails without drilling holes and using fasteners. We tied the first pair on at max beam, and the second pair further aft where they line up near the end of the genoa track. We than tapped a pair of Harken micro cleats onto the aft end of the genoa track – this way you avoid drilling through the deck and need no sealant.
We use those Holt Allen mini opening snatch blocks tied to Marlow 6mm (1/4â€) SD-3 line. The line runs from the mini-snatch blocks, through the first set of Harken ti-lites at max beam, aft to the second set where they are re-directed to the Harken micro cam cleats mounted (via tapped thread) onto the aft end of the genoa track. This cleat location is easily accessible to both the crew and the helm, sometimes during gybes the skipper can easily do this if the crew is unable.
The other beauty of this system is that it means absolutely no holes need to be drilled in your deck and no sealant is required. All-important considerations given the balsa-cored construction, not to mention makes it an easy job that one person can install unassisted for a fairly reasonable cost. Good Luck!
