Foot block purpose

I have never used the foot blocks and as they are located where I would like to sit I am planning to remove these. What are they used for and should I start using them?

They are supposed to provide a "fairer" lead to the jib sheet winches, preventing over-rides. I like them; others don't. Down side is that the sheet sometimes jams there. Probably more helpful on one side than the other, but I can't remember which. Aren't you sitting a little far back for good balance?

Thanks for the reply, maybe we'll give that a try. I sit in that general area depending on the wind and the number of crew.
