2016 Charleston Race Week Wrap Up

Post by RobbieB »

Well it's over! Not sure what was more difficult. Sailing the boat in 25-30 mph breeze against 6-8 foot, (sometimes breaking) swells or sharing a starting line with 15 other boats like J29's, 35, 105's, 120's, Beneteau 50, and others. By far we were the gnat on everyone's ass.....

Had a difficult time in the big breeze/swells. Found out post race we had our small jib leads way to far forward which made the boat drive horrible in those conditions.

Yesterday however, we were back in our element. 10-20 in FLAT water sailing short/multi-lap W/L courses. Started with the #3 and proper lead sets and changed to the #2 and then #1 as breeze laid down. Of the 3 races we won the 1st start at the boat. Next 2 races we quickly got buried by the big rigs, but successfully pulled port tack bail outs to get clean air. In the last race we rounded the first weather mark in 3rd behind some kind of fast 40 footer and a J105.

We ended up with 3, 1,2,1 on the results correcting over the Quantum loft sailed J29 Mighty Puffin in two of the Sunday races. We lost to them by 1 point which was probably due to a protest situation we had with the Beneteau 50 on Saturday and they decided to take every chance they had on Sunday to camp on us when they could. That really sucked.

Looking forward to getting back to sailing with the 24's this summer and we have the Equalizer regatta on the books for this fall.
