I have been contemplating the purchase of a self steering device for Hunting Party.I would like some input from members on their recommendations on models and mounting tips.
Chimo;
Guts.
Will it be driving your boat at this year's nationals?

we have a Simrad tp 10. No interface for gps or any of that, but in installs easily. is very simple to use. And steers the boat very nice. Under $300. I mounted a plug with rubber boot in the side wall about 2-3 inches above the starboard seat and about a foot forward of the transom. Just take the unit plug it in - snap it into the tiller- and go.

Mark,
We have a 15+ year old autohelm which still works fine. it is the old model 800 which has been replaced by the fancier ST1000. I had to make a teak block mounted to the deck near the rear lifeline stantion to mount the unit and installed the plug in the transom. The unit works fine in light to moderate air and when motoring. in heavy air and/or seas - forget it. also be prepared for a fairly large battery drain when using the unit for any period of time. sometimes i simply use it in standby (uses no power) to hold the tiller in one position and then ballance the rig to sail straight. At any rate it is invaluable when sailing singlehanded.
good luck.
