Depends on the area. Down here in SW Florida, Rooster Tail usually sails with just 4 - two heavy and two light, about 750# total, and we do just fine. When it pipes up we go to the blade early and we do fine in the short chop on Charlotte Harbor - outpoint some other S2s with genoas and 5 crew. Comes in real handy when the wind drops to near nothing (as it does frequently over here). And an experienced crew of four can be very efficient. We go with 5 when we travel for the extra horsepower and expertise of a really good fifth crew. See you in St. Pete Larry!

We crew with 4 guys that average about 180 and an occasional 5th crew who weighs around 105. I find weight placement is more critical than total mass. I can move my 200 lbs a foot inboard during a reach and our speed will drop 1/2 knot amid much reprobation and other yelling and cursing.

I race with 5 when I can, and generally our weight is around 1050 lbs.

I've never noticed the boat minding it much in the light stuff, but in the heavier stuff it makes a huge difference upwind.

I would say that for me, about 800-900 pounds if I am doing the math right.

that will be my IRC weight, depending on who does pit and bow for me. But I figure between 180-200 for pit and 130-160 for bow.
