Halyard Clutch

Post by sawalt »

I'm thinking of replacing the halyard clutches on Sugar Magnolia. During the Toliva Shoal Race (4th OA out of 80) I noticed that the main halyard was slipping thru the Sheaffer that I have now. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement? I was thinking of a spinlock.

Sinlocks work for me. Antal worked (past tense) too, but they REALLY chewed up my line.
Best wishes,

I put new spinlocks on about two years ago and they are great. I'm very pleased with them

Hunting Party replaced the original equip. with spinlock XTS Powerclutches. We have experienced no slipppage, distortion of the rope and they release smoothly.

I think Spinlock are good, however I prefer Easylock as I find that the reverse handle set up is easier for making small adjustments, and also the Easylock are much better value.

We have spinlock XTS that are now at least 10 yrs old. No problems with them except that if the genoa halyard is very loaded (25kts breeze) then we have to make sure the cam is fully engaged to stop slipping.

halyard clutch

Post by john hauser »

I have a spinlock clutch on my spin halyard, and the handle tends to get knock down during douses, thereby stopping the halyard off. Does anyone else have this problem? Some one suggested I go to a BIG cam cleat, but the SWL is only 500lbs for the Harken. Is this strong enough?

John,
We have a cam cleat on the mast for the spin halyard. While sailing, the spin halyard is piled at the base of the mast, not drawn through the clutch on the cabin top. During the drop, the bowman is ensuring the halyard is out of the cam and runnign free. He(She) often hand controls the drop speed.
