Interior Wood Finish

I would like to refinish a few items inside the cabin. Pretty sure it's the original finish (same as a friends 8.0) and found a site on S2 info that they used Guardsman Finishing Oil. They claim it's still available but I can't find it anywhere. I'm open to suggestions?

We refinished all of the wood in the boat using Sikkens Cetol Marine. We sanded everything down real well and put on one coat. After it was dry we scuff sanded it with 220 grit sandpaper and 000 steel wool. After that we put a second coat of Cetol on. It looks like a million bucks. It seams to wear very well on the companionway stairs. Be careful that when you sand you don't go through the Teak veneer on some of the plywood surfaces. We just used sandpaper on the plywood. We also used a really sharp cabinet scraper to get the areas that were hard to sand.

I sanded a bit, then used a rag with liquid stripper to evenly blend some of the old color (and remove any water stains). Two coats of "Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane Clear Satin" on everything but the stairs where I used three. I did the stairs two years ago and I am amazed how well they have held up. I use Cetol on the tiller, but I don't really care for the orange tint of the original Cetol (which I believe is part of what gives Cetol superior UV resistance). Before I started, I took some pieces of trim home with me and did some tests on the back side.

This is shamelessly stolen from the S2 9.1 website....

Guardsman Finishing Oil that S2 used has recently been discontinued. The remaining Guardsman products are now marketed by Lille Industries.

Their division chemist in Highpoint North Carolina looked up the composition of this product in their archives for me recently. It is described in their documentation as a modified tung oil sealer. Its composition included tung oil & mineral spirits, and driers including zirconium, magnesium and cobalt. He stated that a similar wood finish should be readily found on the shelves of a Lowe's or Home Depot.

The oil that has been used by my boat's previous owner, and by myself, on the interior wood, with good results, is Watco Danish Oil Finish. It is labeled "Natural" and "for interior use only." Each Spring my wife and I wash the interior wood surfaces with Murphy's Oil Soap, let dry, then wipe down with a rag saturated with this oil.

I am told that Watco is a good quality brand of wood finishing products, made by Watco-Dennis Corp. in Santa Monica Ca. Their product line includes Marine Wood Finish, Marine Teakwood Finish, Teak Oil Finish, and Satin Oil.

Guardsman is a local Chemical Company in Grand Rapids. Went to their site and couldn't find the product, but perhaps someone there can help you find a distributor

I have used Watco brand finishing oil "natural". Looks great, just like original S2 7.9 finish but it states on the can it's for interior only. Will advise on how it hold up.
