Replacement Mast Base Blocks

Post by SSchneiderman »

Hello!

I need to replace my mast base blocks and it appears that Schaefer Marine no longer makes the original equipment design. I am looking for suggestions on what replacement options are out there and have been used, and/or if it was necessary to mill out any of the material in the mast base plate holes in order for the shackle to have more freedom of motion.

Thanks for your suggestions and input on this topic!

Best regards,

Stephanie,

You are correct, Schaefer discontinued the series four blocks. I used a Schaefer series five (506-05), which has a load rating of 1750 lbs. I believe this is slightly more than the series 4 blocks (I looked this up when I replaced mine but I didn't find it with a quick search this time). To get around the mast base problem, just swap the stamped shackle for a forged shackle. I also used a Harken block for one of the others, the Harken came with a forged shackle. Just make sure the block you pick has a load rating >= a Schaefer Series Four.

Stephanie,

I replaced all my blocks with Garhaur, from California. They make beautiful blocks with extra long shackles, and their prices are excellent.

Look them up on their website.

I replaced all of the mast base blocks with Harken Carbo's...most are either 40mm or 60mm. They are cheap, light, and easy to keep the bearings clean.
