What has anyone found to be the fastest option of sailing with cushions vs. the 40 lbs. of weight 3' in front of the board box?

Given that you can move your crew fore / aft, I can't imagine that it makes any measurable difference. Just my thought.

We usually balance it out by putting 40 lbs of beer in the aft lazarette........ (Then we pull out 1 of the 80 lbs bricks - just kiddiing!!!)
