ctr board

Post by Greg Fiegelist »

Is the ctr board suposed to thump (hit) the hull when running in waves (1-2 foot) with it not fully extended?

Yes , the board will thump (hit) the hull everywhere but full down.

It may very well hurt something. Check the bottom of your centerboard trunk for any damage from the thumping.
Unless it is quite flat, we sail with board down all the way as the lift gained on upwind legs offsets the drag.

We pull our board all the way downwind, 1/2-3/4 little wind. We find when forcing a heel it prevents the thunking.

We also pull all the way up down wind, except in waves then we go half down, and if I hear the thunking noise, then there is enough wave action to put it all the way down, sometimes in supper light air it is better with it down in a chop. Jeff Skyhawk #250

Sailing with the board partially up in any chop will leave nice shark bites in the leading and trailing edges of the board. Unless the water is flat, I recommend board all the way up or all the way down. Hauling the boat or the board and fixing it all the time is too much work.

I tend to agree with John. If the board's thumpin' for long, get prepared for board repair work.
Best wishes,
