Cockpit Locker Leak

Post by Roger Kuebel »

I am getting an unusually large amount of rain water accumulating in the cockpit locker, and have not yet been able to determine the source of the leak. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try 'building up' the lip of the laz with some sticky-back door / window insulation. Both the 1/4" foam type and the denser polyethylene stuff seem to work. Put it on the top-most point of the rim of the locker, not on the lip of the closure.
Best wishes,

When we owned Maniac 311 we installed a rubber door seal material to prevent this problem.

locker leak

when this happened to me a couple of years back, I discovered that the tubing that leads from the cockpit scuppers to the outside of the hull (positioned in the extreme aft of the cockpit sole) was split-- so that every time it rained, or every time the boat heeled and submerged the drain on the hull, water leaked into the locker. it took me awhile to figure it out, but it was a quick fix once I did-- just get some flexible reinforced plastic tubing from the plumbing supply store, some tube clamps, cut the tubing to the right length (about 6 inches, I think), and replace it. check it out, I'll bet that's where you're getting water.

We had a similar experience to Drake. One of the hoses cracked at the clamp band, it was hard to tell it was cracked. 1 or 2 gallons of water would accumulate each week while sitting at the dock. We reworked the scuppers and now she's dry.

cockpit locker leak

Post by Jim Kloss »

I seem to be taking on water after running in a following sea. Given these previous posts, I'd suspect the scuppers -- or maybe a fitting on the bilge pump? The tubes connecting the cockpit sole to the hull are rigid, not flexible tubing, and I don't see any sign of leakage. I may have to climb down there the next time we're sailing in those conditions. Ugh!

Any suggestions or ideas?

Jim,
We finally figured our problem out by cramming a small crew member in the locker while hosing down the cockpit. This was done at the dock so we didn't have to mess about in high following seas.

lazarette leak - FOUND IT

Post by Jim Kloss »

The PO had deliberately put a serious kink in the bilge pump hose, and after 20+ years it appears that the joint has failed. Running in a following sea, the transom sits down a bit and we were taking on water. Glad I never had to run away from a serious storm! I've never even tested the factory installed bilge pump, but I guess it's time to replumb it.
