Daggerboard/reaching

Post by LarryE-old »

I have noticed that some 7.9's raise the board half way on a beam reach.
Would like feedback on this subject, when to raise and when not to.

Except for from 150 degrees to 210 degrees apparent, the dagger board actually creates lift in excess of the drag. This is in winds above 8-10 kts. If the wind is lighter, or the crew needs the exercise, raising the board can be beneficial.

It would seem to me that with the board being raised on beam reach, significant leeway is likely. Broad reach would make sense though.

Am I off in my thinking?

The helm will tell you when there's too little centerboard -- you get lee helm!

Raise the CB until the helm is neutral...then drop it a little for reserve. It's a standard dinghy approach.

Our policy on Rebel is board all the way up or all the way down. It tends bounce around in the box and makes nicks in the leading edge.
