Repowering a 7.9 inboard

Post by apjarvis@aol.com »

Hi,

What are the best options for repowering an inboard 7.9 that still has the 20 year old BMW engine in it? I would probably prefer replacement to repair. What is the best option?

Thanks for your reply.

Don Harasyn had a good experience rebuilding his BMW last year; see his post on the second page of this discussion. My crew would want me to switch to an outboard if I ever had to give up on my Yanmar.

Allan,

My S2, I think it is #436, came from S2 with the Yanmar 8HP Diesel, which has worked very well, and is really easy to get parts or have serviced. I would personally recommend the Yanmar over the BMW.

Yanmar 1GM10

Post by tpf »

My boat was repowered about 10-15 years ago. The prior owner installed a Yanmar 1GM10 and it has worked out well. I had the engine rebuilt a few years ago due to a service problem. A Yanmar authorized service man tried starting the engine with ether and buggered it up a bit.

Rich Oliver "The Diesel Doctor" out of Kent Island rebuilt the engine and it has been perfect ever since. If you are in the Chesapeake area it may be worth talking to Rich if you can. He is a great guy!

I also replaced the prop at the time with a Martec eliptical folding prop. If I was doing it over I would get the geared prop as the eliptical does not fold easily - I try to fold it by hand when I dive overboard to scrub the bottom.

Also I had bad experience with the Bullet shaped zinc from Martec - it offered no protection and when I removed it it still looked new. Unfortunately the prop did not!

Here are some good resources that may help.

Repowering

Post by sailon »

It appears that my boat had a diesel at one time that was removed, and have occasionally thought of repowering with a diesel, probably a 1GM10. Has anyone given any thoughts to a saildrive??? It would be far easier to install, and I think that the drag would be about the same. Looking for opinions both from a rules standpoint as well as drag.
