how fast can it go??????
what is the top speed anyone has seen in a 7.9 up wind and down, no holds barred, no fisherman stories, and by the knot meter, so surfing down a wave counts?

speed
I try not to push past 60mph, trailer needs a brake job.
Seriously, last year, single handed the boat home from an away local, down wind with reefed main, no jib.
Boat crested and surfed down the swells at 7.5-8.0 kts. Wind was 20-25kts, gusting slightly higher. Wave heights about 6', but spread wide so the ride was pleasantly smooth.

Flyin
No speedo but two years ago we were running down wind under spinnaker, we sail in a bend in the river so at the weather mark the wind was blowing around 20-25 shielded from obstructions on land. As we ran toward the next mark the wind got stronger to the point that the boat was surfing and surging back and fourth. We were trying to form a plan on how to get the chute down when the shackle on the guy let go and the boat broached. Later we found out the winds hit 48 mph.
As I said no speedo but we were flying.

9.3 according to the GPS and measured bouy to bouy on the chart. We were in sheltered water (bunch of small islands with few trees, close reaching in an estimated 18 knots of wind with the main and the 155. It was a hoot!
We only had 3 miles to go before we doused and so didn't bother to shorten sail.
Of course, that doesn't come close to the 87.

Any day sailing is a day in the classroom.
Bragging rights?
Come on guys, the boats are faster than that!
Ambivalence hit over 11 knots by GPS surfing down wind, board down during the BVI Spring Regatta. Have a picture to prove it if I could figure how to post it. No bragging rights, though. ABN AMRO, that won the regatta, claimed 33 knots on the same run.
I remember reading somewhere of a West Coast 7.9 that hit 14 knots downwind.

Jim, we're talking apples and oranges. Any boat can hall buns while surfing, but it lasts only as long as you can stay on that wave. I sail on a lake. The almost 10 I'm talking about was very broad reaching, sustained speed. Much more difficult to accomplish. Like lot's of lead sleds the 7.9 reaches hull speed and then just starts to load up and get squirrely if you try and sail it close to dead downwind. Heading up a little and having a crew that moves back, hikes and trims helps the boat get out of it's own way and results in better VMG. Of course tacticly, that may not always be the best option. Those round, deep aft sections on the 7.9 really tend to pull a huge wave, it's tough to break free of without surfing, and on a lake, it may be blowing 40 and still be flat water if you are on the windward part of the course, close to shore.
