7.9 repower question

Post by richrand »

Hi Everyone,

My boat has the inboard BMW D7. I'm pretty sure at this point that the alternator is toast. This seems like a cool engine, but it has not been trouble free and getting spares has been a real pain. From the D7 forum, I'm coming to understand that repairing the idiosyncratic alternator is almost not worth it.

My first question is what might be a good choice for a repower? I'd like something like a Yanmar, which has spare parts galore. How do I go about figuring something like this out? I'm a total novice to this stuff. If anyone who's gone through this could throw some advice my way, I'd appreciate it.

Second, is getting a used engine worth the money?

Thanks a bunch,

Rich

Rich,
Get ahold of the diesel power guys at Torresen Marine in Muskegon Mich. They can steer you right.

Try this guy. He has rebuilt Yanmar 1GM10 which would be a good repower and he also does work to BMW d7's.

Diesel Information

The 1GM10 is a really nice engine with excellent support. If you are having issues with a marine diesel here is a very good site. It is about $25/yr to join and there are experts around the globe that provide good feedback. They may be able to put you on to a place with good support.

They also have a classified section.

The 1GM10 also has a different torque curve so if you replace the BMW it would be worth looking at replacing the prop also. If memory serves the 1GM10 can drive a higher pitch which gives the boat more punch in chop or going into the wind.

There is a place to get just about any part you need. They also have manuals. By the way the BMW D7 appears to be in production.

Check it out at www.bmwmarine.net that would be:

V12 Engineering
P.O. Box 50
Keewatin, Ontario Canada
