Switching the BMW for a Yanmar

Hi,

So I got my hands on a nice Yanmar 1gm and I'm going to swap out my troublesome BMW d7. If anyone has done this operation, please send me a note. This is going to be a big job and advice from people who've got experience with this would be a huge help.

Also, if anyone with a 1gm or 1gm10 would be willing to send a couple pics of their engine compartment (particularly the bed arrangement), I'd be greatly indebted to you.

Yanmar Conversion

My boat had a Yanmar conversion prior to me purchasing it. The things I recall that looked different were as follows:

The top of the rails that the engine bolted to were modified by planing the back to lower the rear motor mounts and blocks were added to the from to move the forward mounts forward. As I recall they added a 2x4 to the front edge and screwed it in place.

The controls on the yanmar were smaller so they mounted the Yanmar control lower and installed a teak block on top to close the hole and it helped deflect water from running across the control panel.

I am not sure if they changed the shaft, packing box or strut when they did it.

Hi Rick, My 1986 boat came from the factory with the Yanmar, chosen as an option by the original owner. I am "all shrunk up" at the moment here in frozen Michigan, but will be glad to take pictures and provide any measurements when the weather breaks a little. A had the engine out last year because of junk in the aluminum fuel tank. Unfortunately, the old tank was behind the engine, and of a size that required the engine to be pulled to fix it. I had Blue Water Marine, in Harrison Township, fabricate a new tank that would:
1. Be able to be pulled thru one of the cockpit hatches if needed.
2. Had a fuel gauge installed.

I would recommend that if you pull the engine, you pull the tank and inspect it, and very probably clean it completely out. I was completely fouled with algie in the tank and other junk.
