Turnbuckles
I need to replace my standing rigging. I presently have the "open" bronze turnbuckles on the side stays. Are the closed stainless ones more desirable or replace with the same?

I agree on the open style, and also tie a small piece of line through, much faster that rings, but I have thought about the Ronstan SeaLoc turnbuckles that are incremented and you can get a flip down lever for a no tool needed adjustment, since you will be replacing everything anyway, thats on next years list for me!

Stainless Turn Buckles
I would stay away from the closed Stainless turnbuckles, the one on my headstay galed and froze. I ended up having to cut it off with a dremel tool. I got real diligent about applying neversiez after that. Starting fresh with bronze makes more sense.
They are also easier to secure, you can run a line or zip tie between the bodies of the upper and lower shroud so they cannot loosen up and change your tuning.

We use the Velcro strip with pins from Layline on the shrouds. It makes for fast, easy, and secure tuning, and we don't have to tape 'em up all the time to reduce chafe.dave wrote:What he said. Stainless on stainless is infamous for galling. I use a velcro strip to tie the drums together to make tuning easy. Layline and APS sell velcro strips with short cotter pins attached. Nice!
